BAFFINLAND IRON MINES TRUCK SHOP

Nahanni Construction Ltd. undertook the construction of a Maintenance Truckshop and Washbay for Baffinland Iron Mine. The project involved the construction of a 9,000 ft² building with an 80′ eve to accommodate a 60-ton overhead crane, specifically designed for CAT 793D Ore Haul Trucks and CAT 994 Front End Loader maintenance. Baffinland operates one of the most remote mine sites in Canada, located on the north end of Baffin Island, Nunavut.

CHALLENGES

  • Working in the high Arctic logistics are always major challenge, Nahanni successfully mobilized their fleet of mobile equipment, portable batch plant, foundation materials, building steel, and mechanical/electrical equipment within four weeks to meet the client’s shipping schedule from the Port of Valleyfield in Montreal.
  • Nahanni used past experience and industry expertise to suggest improvements to the design of the HVAC system, resulting in significant cost savings for the client.
  • Nahanni successfully mobilized all materials and equipment to the shipping port in a timely manner, and they provided additional assistance by erecting other required infrastructure and repurposing existing facilities on-site
